Always used to admire my mother's facility for writing Pitman's shorthand at breakneck speed. Oh, how I wish they had taught it to me at school... that secret language that very few people understand. I could use it so frequently when I'm in 'thinking' mode, to write down ideas...

However, I digress... What I was really meant to comment on was 'Family shorthand', and we all have it, don't we?

Just made son's birthday cake for his 'surprise' birthday party later tonight... Well, yes, I have to admit the cake's a little wonky, and I did have to flip it over because I broke the top... and all right, if you must know, the cream has oozed out all around the side... But once I showered it with multi-coloured sugar strands and stuck 'sparkler' candles in all over the place it didn't look half bad- or so I thought.

'Mmm, I'm sure it will taste very nice, dear,' said dh.

What he really meant was, 'Tell me I don't have to eat that...'

Last time some contemporaries of my son asked if they could take the remains of my quite obviously bodged, but undeniably 'home made' cake home.

You see, dh, anything's a welcome change from shop bought, even my cockamamie efforts!
